During the 1920-1930 period there was a limited production of Kashan carpets employing Manchester spun Australian Merino wool as in the past, but in rich, deep burgundy tones and allover patterns. This occurred under the influence of the lesser quality, but popular, red “American” Saruks. The Kashan carpets of this decade have supremely silky, velvety wool and jewel tone colours. This rug has a prayer niche design centring an exuberant vase, beneath medium blue spandrels. Almost all the detail colours are in shades of blue and there is very little ivory or other light tones. The weave is very fine and even, and was precisely executed from a scale paper cartoon. Almost all antique Manchester wool Kashans are in carpet sizes and it is very rare to find one in such a small size and in perfect condition. Although Persian rug design has a long history and has evolved considerably since the 1920’s, the restrained elegance and sophistication of this style, and this rug in particular, have never been surpassed.
