This Kerman cusped niche design carpet has a dense millefleurs pattern on a royal blue ground under red floral spandrels. The en suite medium blue main border is flanked by yellow and ivory minors. The central flowering tree grows from a vase. The verdant tree, bush or flowering plant emerging from a vase, sometimes positioned on a raised stand, is a classic pictorial; convention in Persian art. The close coverage of the ground is characteristic of Kerman rugs from the 1920’s. As always, the colour palette is exceptionally wide, with at least fifteen tones of natural origin.
