Bakshaish Type Heriz Carpet
Azerbaijan Province, Northwest Persia
The mellow rust/terra cotta ground of this antique Persian village carpet displays an irregular, allover lattice reminiscent of the classic Mina Khani pattern. Slanted sawtooth leaves, large hexagons, stars, super-stylised palmettes, quincunxes, rosettes and other geometric elements are laid out in a flat, two dimensional array and there are no representational forms. Detail colours include salmon, old ivory, pale green, powder blue, straw and dark brown. A powder blue main border shows octagonal geometric rosettes connected with four stiff vine segments. As in many Bakshaish carpets of this period, there is a plain outermost border band, here in golden camel. The two cord selvage is light camel tone wool and the foundation is all cotton with symmetric knots.
