Heriz Carpet, Serapi
Azerbaijan Province, Northwest Persia
The well abrashed camel ground of this antique Persian village carpet displays a classic one way (ascending) garden pattern of cypresses, weeping willows, prunus and Chenar (plane) trees, some forming continuous poles up the field. There are smaller flowering bushes and single blossoming plants interspersed. The palettes is wide, including several blues, ivory, three reds, various greens and blue-greens, yellow-tan and dark brown.
The dynamic, broad main border has a bold in -and-out turtle palmette pattern with multiple connecting stiff vines and lancet leaves swirling around rosettes. The two blue minor stripes are in an undulating vine pattern.
Alternate warps are fully depressed, resulting in a firm and leathery texture. The knots are symmetric on an all cotton foundation. The pile is clipped moderately short.
The informal, but well organised drawing and wide tonality makes this rustic carpet a perfect match for any decorative scheme. The design is totally authentic and the execution relay with fidelity one of the most iconic of Persian carpet patterns.
