Antique Sultanabad carpets from Arak Province in northwest Persia, especially those with ivory field and overall patterns, as here, are among the most enduringly popular and desirable of roomsized rugs. A light blue trellis subtly structures a pattern of colourful rosettes, variously scaled palmettes and posies, and curvy vine segments. The elements are well-spaced and seem to float above the ground tone. The royal blue main border of rosettes, diagonal palmettes and branching floral sprays descends ultimately from Kerman “Vase” carpets of the 17th century.
