Sultanabad carpets from the late 19th century are particularly prized for their overscaled, allover patterns, vigourous and bold, without diverting minor details. This red ground example has a design of diagonal palmettes derived from classical Persian sources. A few vases have been included to further make the design lineage connexion. On the other hand, the medium blue border of palmettes connected by a double vine is a nineteenth century innovation. All colours derive from natural sources and the weave is medium dense on a cotton foundation. Sultanabad carpets, most in allover patterns, are particularly desirable in providing maximum versatility in furniture placement. No medallions to constrain the location of a couch, table or chair!
