Tabriz carpets come in both medallion and allover patterns. Here a warm red ground underlays a light blue split arabesque design with almost circular bursts of petals and smaller arrays of flowerheads. The split arabeque pattern is seen on Garrus-Bijar carpets, but here the Tabriz designers have made it their own. The mid blue main border has palmettes linked by a thin vine ornamented with smaller diagonal palmettes. Tabriz carpets are woven by professional workers and precisely follow the designers’ cartoons. This attractive piece is perfectly left/right symmetric. The pile is short and resilient with a characteristic tough lustre found on better quality Tabriz carpets. The allover pattern allows almost unlimited furniture arrangements and the individual character of the design is above a the usual run of standardised Persian patterns. The overall tonality is warm and discreetly colourful.
