Antique Tabriz Carpet
Late 19th century
This is a particularly fine medallion Tabriz carpet in the desirable Hajijalili type. The red flower-filled central diamond with palmette pendants focuses the ivory field with its millefleurs style vines and flower sprays. The field is edged with volutes as it joins the lime green corners decorated with split arabesques. There is an attractive narrow light blue abrash across the two upper corners. The red border has an in-and-out palmette design with additional rosettes and lancet leaves, all connected by a springy double vine. The ivory minors employ clusters of triple dots along with small rosettes and bracket leaves.
This Tabriz is perfectly drawn and balanced with integrative colour harmonies: medallion to main border, field to minor borders. There is a plain band surrounding the whole.
Tabriz carpets of this quality level are always precisely drawn and executed, with no elements out of place and no extraneous motives added by the weavers.
The condition is excellent, with a short, erect pile of top quality local wool on an all cotton foundation.
