Oushak, in western Turkey, has been weaving carpets for nearly six hundred years. The antique Oushak carpets from around 1900 have, as here, long piles, mellow colours and open designs. This lush, full pile example has an oatmeal ground with three complete design axes of stylised palmettes, leafy flowering branches and small botanical devices. A discreet cartouche indicates the centre, but the pattern may be considered as allover. The pale yellow main border displays colourful, striped cypresses. Most antique Oushak Turkish carpets of the period are in rather more squarish and the 14′ by 18′ proportions of this highly decorative carpet reflect this tendency. The best Oushak carpets of the c. 1900 period were woven for the British firm Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The overall high quality indicates that this is very likely an OCM creation. The firm employed an in-house design atelier and successfully fused traditional Persian patterns with its own imaginative, unique innovations. Antique Oushak carpets have always been sought-after by designers and have never gone out of style. Their versatility in virtually any design context is legendary. This carpet will enhance any decorative context.
