This attractive c. 1900 antique Heriz carpet has, instead of the classic medallion pattern, a centralised design with oversize lancet leaves and colourful palmettes. The fractional motives at the ends of the field imply anallover pattern extending beneath the borders out to infinity. The deep navy ground sets off the geometric design with its detail tones of medium blue, camel, salmon, red and ivory. This antique northwest Persian village carpet displays the iconic rosette and bent leaf main border with a scatter of secondary dots indicative of a turn of the century origin. The earliest versions of the border are dotless and the later, post WWI renditions are loaded with these spots. The weave is good, with a depressed warp in the “Serapi” manner, but the design is something else. Antique Heriz carpets with such a bold pattern and deep field tone are rare, and this is a particularly desirable example of an uncommonly encountered group.
