This allover pattern ivory ground Kashan from the 1920’s is a far cry from the usual medallion and corners, red field, blue border pieces one usually associates with Kashan. The powerfully curvilinear split arabesques devolve from S shaped palmettes. There is an imaginative exuberance of leaves, flower heads and buds filling the interstices of the larger vinery. The royal blue border displays a variety of vase-like forms with colourful bouquets, along with polychrome floral sprays. The usual rigid linearity of the borders is broken by these jardinieres and other devices. This phenomenon began in the 1920’s and became popular in many types of urban Persian carpets in the following decades. The pile is clipped short, the better to display the intricate design and the knotting is quite fine to execute it.
